What is Organic?
The word Organic 'means living', and in practical terms, this means natural food that is grown in living soil without and processed without chemical fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides or fungicides used in intensive farming. Organic farmers pay special attention to the entire ecosystem. Nothing unnatural is allowed so there are no growth hormones, antibiotics, preservatives, dyes, chemical coatings or irradiation allowed. There is no genetic engineering allowed in organic foods.
It's about producing goods that work in harmony with, and not against, nature. The aim is to eradicate the use of harmful chemicals by making effective use of nature's natural resources.
Organic food is nothing more than pure nutritional food - the way it used to be. Organically grown and naturally ripened produce is believed to have a higher content of essential vitamins and minerals. Besides organic food tastes better. In todays day of not knowing what we are getting in our foods i.e. chemicals, growth hormones antibiotics etc. we are at least getting a choice in certain foods now. It is all in our hands now to make that choice, even if it is just a few changes as our budget allows. |
